Check in with your heart Our hearts work 24/7 pumping blood and renewing our bloodstream with vital oxygen. Thankfully, studies suggest that lifestyle factors influence heart health over genetics. Read the Northwestern study here. Regular exercise, a good diet high in fresh veggies, fiber and lean proteins keep our hearts primed for a long life. Reducing stress is also critical to heart health and we can look to the yoga concept of the heart chakra for further insight. Perhaps healing the heart chakra might heal our physical hearts, especially during times of grief and loss. I bring up grief and loss because a good friend's apartment burned down and all three of her cats died. Her cats were beautiful and loving creatures that graciously tolerated our raucous presence at her fun parties. They would slip between us while we sampled her delicious vegetarian cooking and occasionally sniff us, sizing us up with their sharp eyes. I always wondered what mystical secrets of the universe they were privy to but even if they could talk, they would not divulge these secrets to us lowly humans. Little did I know that I would pet them for the last time at her winter farewell send off for her silent 6 week yoga retreat. I dedicate this blog post to my wonderful friend, Keralee Froebel and send her well wishes as she journeys through her grief and loss. | |
